As a Director, Desi Alvarez will work on reducing the cost of water. Desi Alvarez will implement sound fiscal accountability and eliminate the current practices which have led to excessive water rates to fund questionable programs and practices. The West Basin Water District provides water to the Cities of Hermosa Beach, Manhattan Beach, Redondo Beach, Lomita and West Torrance. These cities have some of the highest water rates in Los Angeles County. This is due to West Basin Water District's 22.5% surcharge on our water.
The incumbent spent taxpayer money on trips to China, Hong Kong, Argentina and Spain. Between July 1998 and June 1999 she received over $52,000 in reimbursements for a volunteer position. Are voters to believe it is necessary for her to travel worldwide to do her job? It's time voters stop paying for her vacations.
Over the past 20 years, Desi Alvarez has planned, designed, constructed and operated major water systems for Santa Monica, the East Bay (Oakland) Municipal Water District and for Downey - including negotiating for the procurement of water. Desi Alvarez is a professional engineer with a bachelor's degree in engineering and a master's degree in environmental engineering.
