City Adds NEW Recycling Services for Residents and Businesses
Under New Waste Hauler Effective July 1, 2011

Beginning July 1, 2011, Athens Services will be the new refuse hauler in Redondo Beach.

On January 4, 2011, the City of Redondo Beach City Council awarded the exclusive franchise agreement to Athens Services for the collection of refuse, recycling and green waste services beginning July 1, 2011. The current agreement with Consolidated Disposal Services (CDS) ends June 30, 2011.

For the past two years, City staff has diligently worked on the Request for Proposal (RFP) process. A total of five proposals were received which included Athens Services, CDS, Crown, CR&R and EDCO. Athens Services proposed the lowest rates with exceptional environmental programs that will position Redondo Beach as a leader in “green” programs in the South Bay. New programs for the City will include food waste collection at curbside and from restaurants, an annual Shred Day for sensitive document destruction, and the bulky item collection program will now include electronic waste. Curbside customers will receive new green waste and refuse containers and all containers will be available in the 32, 64 and 96 gallon sizes. The route supervisor will be assigned exclusively to the City of Redondo Beach to provide improved customer service.

Overall, the City’s refuse rates will decline 6% from the current rates. The new single family refuse rate will decrease from $14.38 to $14.04 per month. Multi-family accounts with a typical 3-yard bin serviced once per week will decrease from $97.72 to $78.00 per month. Commercial accounts with a 3-yard bin serviced once per week will decrease from $101.78 to $81.32.

During the City’s proposal evaluation process, Athens clearly stood out as a quality contractor conducting refuse collection services in 19 cities and maintaining a high customer satisfaction rating. Athens has experience operating in hard to reach areas, steep streets, and narrow streets by employing various sized trucks and collection practices.
